Chess in Yerevan: schools by district, tournaments all year
In Yerevan chess is above all something children learn. Every administrative district keeps a municipal chess school, free according to the city, and the Chess Academy of Armenia on Shevchenko Street teaches groups six days a week. Older players meet at tournaments rather than club evenings, chiefly at the Tigran Petrosian Chess House on Khanjyan Street, at the Academy and in the district schools.

Chess960 in Yerevan
Nothing over the board has been found in Yerevan for Chess960, Fischer Random or Freestyle chess. Every Armenian event on the chess-results server dated from 2025 to 2027 and every Armenian entry of the FIDE rated-tournament list for 2025 and 2026 were read for those names; the one title carrying Fischer's name, a Victory Day tournament, is played at ten minutes plus two seconds a game.
In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns are shuffled into one of 960 starting rows, so a memorised opening is no help from the first move on. Until a Yerevan school or the Chess House puts it on the calendar, it can be played online at ch960.com.
The nearby towns gave none either: no Chess960 event is listed in Abovyan, Masis, Ashtarak or Vagharshapat.
How the entries are assembled
The reference holds 51 entries, 51 of them active or awaiting a newer trace. Armenia keeps no public register of chess clubs, so the entries were drawn from the city's list of sports schools and its school platform, the chess-results tournament server, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, and the pages of the Academy and the federation; the latest consultation was on .
Lists run from the newest dated trace to the oldest; position says nothing about quality. Where no page answers a question, the entry reads “not stated by sources”. What the source marks and the two status lines mean, and what the reference does not cover, is explained on the method page.
A school, a series or a hall missing here?
District schools move to new buildings, new memorials join the calendar and halls change hands. If an entry has fallen out of date, or a chess school, club or tournament series is not listed, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
